Real CB Radios are side mic

VERY nice alarm clock, HomerBB.

Might even be able to do better than the seven miles as that’s all that 747-8 can do (41,000-feet; hardy har-har).

But neither is a side mic, now is it?

Here's my latest side mic! I'll get it mounted as time permits. Opened it up Saturday to do the typical inspection of qc's work and finally got it buttoned back up and on the air this evening. Unbelievably, some dx from Jamaica in the receiver but no qso. Compared to the quad 6 receiver as I alternated them the galaxy has a more pleasant receiver so far. We'll see how it really performs when conditions help us out.

Conditions are . . those of The Big Road.

Can’t keep a stallion locked in the barn!

(With a bit more sobriety, we need your opinion on what microphone?).

Very nice, reminds me of my 99v. That's funny you mentioned the Quad 6, that's the same thing I thought when I compared it to my 86v. I think the newer Galaxies come with the Schottky diodes in the receiver.

Yes sir, my thoughts exactly. You know I've ran the quad 6 as the permanent ssb rig for years now and guess I've just gotten used to the receiver. Once the galaxy sat in the base spot and had something to compare with, the smoother receiver was pretty noticeable. Not that the quad 6 receiver hasn't done well, it's just not as quiet or smooth if that makes sense. Pleased to say the least. I did notice the blue schottky's in the receiver circuit when it was undressed and is probably part of the equation.

You know, if ranger could just produce a piece of equipment with the solidity of the quixiang made radios they could make a solid product. By solidity I mean consistency in a quality build. This galaxy was no different than others owned in the past when it came time to go through the innards. Cleaned up the soldering and tiny blobs throughout the component side. The finals had hardly any compound and the insulators were so crooked I just removed, cleaned and reinstalled them. The bias was over 4 volts to start with on both driver and final so that couldn't be ignored.. I know a lot of it is my own ocd but man why does it have to be that way. In the end, it sounds good, hears well and I think it's a rather attractive cb radio. I've learned that just about anything made by Ranger needs to be reworked a little to make them shine but once they shine they do it pretty well. Might put the 503hd after this one eventually.

Ross, personally the telex rk56 is almost my preference with any ranger made radio so that was my first choice. It did sound well on the monitor radio but I also tried the recently acquired 575m6. The 575 is a little hot so the volume has to be way down but it has a nice full sound to it. Of course one NC and the other a power mic so not exactly apples to apples. I also tried the ec-2018 and got so hung up on all the noises it'll make that time ran out and had to shut down for the night. Thorough the next days the mic arsenal will come out and will report back on my opinions.

Bought a new and improved STRYKER SR-65BC mic today while at Walcott CB.

Maybe it’s the Stryker audio secret, huh?

And will have to get a few mics repaired before I gather up the bunch and do some comparisons.

When at Larry’s we threw on a new RK56 which I’m back to using. Have always loved the shape, etc, just not in love with the sound after circa MY 2000. The Standard others have to beat.

Edit: Did a quick comparison between RK56 & SR65: back down mic gain to 3/4 on the 65 and it sounds fairly close to the 56 with max gain (across a radios speaker in sleeper). The 65 gets “too loud” at maximum.

Using a headset in a quieter environment might be better, but with my voice (baritone) it was quite close.

The switch on the 65 is miles ahead better than others. (Hope it remains in that condition).

At this point the sound quality of each makes it a toss-up for choice. There’s no evidence given for disappointment with either.

Might
be that matching mic & radio become the final, decisive steps as to which.

Side Mic Contenders

Turner RK56
Astatic 636L
Astatic RD104m6b
Astatic Red Devil
Galaxy stock mic
PALOMAR SL41
Stryker SR65bc

Plus a few Workmann and SuperStar generics to make it lively.

Those are (will be) the ones I have. Am interested in what YOU tried with a DX-959.

Noise-Cancelling really does get the nod, but let’s try ‘em all.
