MOSFET conversions for upD858 and MB8719 boards

I had a Cobra 142GTL a while back that I did some experimenting on, I decided to put in an IRF520N mosfet in place of the 2SC1969 final. When I got done putting in everything into place I was producing 30W PEP output on SSB. However.... ... it took out the mode selector switch, more...

    Dx500 vs DX1600

SM, Your X-Force is likely not class AB biased, so it will not sound good on SSB. That's why it sounds "crunchy". That amp will need proper biasing installed for it run properly on SSB. Running a Stryker 955 on a DX500 is not a good idea, that's way too much drive for the DX500. You'll also...

    TS 667V keying issue

Does the amp key up as soon as you turn it on, or does it not key up at all? ~Cheers~

    Dx500 vs DX1600

For the DX500, 30-40W PEP max, that'll drive it nicely to full output without hurting it too badly. Personally, 30-35W is good. Make sure you run a fan on the heatsink, and flip the amp "upside down" so the heatsink fins are on top, so the warm air can be drawn up and away from the unit. For...

    Dx500 vs DX1600

The 1600 will work just fine with 45W peak on AM and 40W PEP on SSB with no problem, it just won't produce the full output that's advertised. At 45W in, you'll likely get 500-700W out, perhaps a little more depending on your antenna system. You'd be fine if you wanted to go that route. ~Cheers~

    Skywalker Base Amp Repair

Ok, on a serious note. I do see some things that will need to be changed out/reworked. 1) Proper biasing on the bases of the transistors for class AB. This needs to be around .6V. 2) There's no input tune at the input combiner, add a 465 Arco variable trimmer capacitor at the input combiner to...

    Skywalker Base Amp Repair

Yech... that unregulated power supply makes me cringe.... it also needs proper biasing on the bases of transistors... it's running class C in its current state, so if you're wanting to run SSB on it, it will need some serious reworking. You should just sell it to me. :) ~Cheers~

    2x4 Davemade

Is that Connex a dual final radio or a single final radio (since the internal amp has been bypassed)? If it's a dual final radio, you'll cook the 2 x 4 amp, as 40W+ of drive is way too much for that amp. If the Connex is a single final radio only, that won't be as hard on the amp. Will you be...

looking for an HG 2879 transistor with a gain of 67 or close to it

Do they actually carry HG's though? I never saw anything on the website about HG's, just their own RFParts branded 2879's. That's why I ordered a pair directly from HG Semiconductor. Are the RFParts branded 2879's the same thing as the HG's? Were they able to send you a transistor with close or...

What electronics have YOU fixed lately?

Well, I seem to have a love of TRC-458's, so I picked up a 2nd one. This one was a mess. Lightning grabbed this one and it was B.L.A.C.K. underneath. Someone had done some repair work on it before me, and surprisingly, the radio actually functioned when I got it. Items that were replaced...

    RCI 2995DX no transmit power

I checked a couple of known good 2SB754's and I got an HFE of 101/104. I think there's something goofy with yours, I think it may have gotten damaged somehow. Let us know how you get on once you get your B754's in. (y) ~Cheers~

    RCI 2995DX no transmit power

That HFE doesn't seem right at all... I can check a 2SB754 and see what the HFE is on it, but I still suspect a damaged pass regulator. Do you have a spare B754 or B827? Also, what was the number on the one you pulled? ~Cheers~

    RCI 2995DX no transmit power

Sounds like you took out the AM pass regulator transistor. In this particular radio, the pass regulator transistor controls the voltage and current in ALL modes. You'll have to replace Q66, which depending on the year your 2995 was built, will be either a 2SB754, or a 2SB827. It's located on the...
